Crystal-clear Catholic Radio listening in Central Indiana
Catholic Radio Indy is all about spreading the faith through our 24-hour programming, but our radio signal doesn’t always blanket the city the way we’d like. So, we’re excited to announce that we have a solution through an agreement with another local radio source.Crystal-clear Catholic Radio listening in Central Indiana
We’re calling it our “Small Miracle” personal radio.
Catholic Radio Indy is all about spreading the faith through our 24-hour programming, but our radio signal doesn’t always blanket the city the way we’d like. So, we’re excited to announce that we have a solution through an agreement with another local radio source.
If you’re looking for clear portable Catholic radio programming in the greater Indianapolis area, we have the answer!
A special $20 radio, tuned to Catholic Radio Indy!
The Metrosonix MS Y2K S is an FM radio that also has a setting tuned to the “FM Subcarrier” (often abbreviated as SCA) signal from a local classical radio station that now carries our programming, too! This same technology has been used for many years by the “background music industry”—think Muzak —to deliver music to stores and businesses in large areas.
Our Small Miracle radio is available at the following stores:
The Village Dove, Fishers
317-845-5487
Holy Family Books, Carmel
317-385-4155
Krieg Brothers, Indy Downtown
317-638-3416
Angel’s Corner
E. Southport Rd, 317-784-0890
Great programming is there for RCIA candidates such as EWTN’s Catholic Answers Live and The Journey Home or Ave Maria’s Kresta in the Afternoon. These radios would also make nice gifts for religious and shut-ins who cannot receive a radio signal.
Contact Station Manager Jim Ganley, 317-870-8400, ext. 21, for details on how to order several and receive a discount.
89.1 FM – A good station for the money
Catholic Radio Indy leases 89.1 FM airtime from Hoosier Broadcasting, using a transmitter located west of Indianapolis in Cloverdale. Our radio signal carries pretty well to the Indianapolis Westside, but stretching into the northeast, east and south sides of town our signal can be pretty fuzzy at times. The FCC regulates radio station power output and range so that they usually don’t interfere with each other. But depending on weather conditions, our WSPM 89.1 FM, Cloverdale signal can cross with signals from other stations.
Depending on where you are in Indianapolis, you might hear WBOI 89.1 FM, Fort Wayne, or WAUZ 89.1 FM, Greensburg or – especially in the vicinity of North Central High School – background noise from WJEL 89.3 FM.
Our SCA radio tuned to the WICR 88.7 FM subcarrier signal provides clear reception across the greater Indianapolis area.
In 2001, when Bob Teipen, founder of Catholic Radio Indy, began thinking about finding a radio station to fulfill his desire to evangelize his Catholic faith in Indianapolis, even small stations whose value 10 years previously ranged in the tens of thousands of dollars, were selling for millions and fetched large monthly lease fees for their owners.
Until relatively recently, FCC rules limited individual corporate ownership to seven TV or radio stations, nationally. Now, unrestricted ownership has led to radio conglomerates whose competition to own more radio stations has pushed the price of ownership to previously unknown price levels. In the Indianapolis market, there are eight owners of the 20 top stations broadcasting there. The purchase price not long ago for a small Plainfield station, WRDZ –that became Radio Disney – fetched $4 million. Another is the tiny Brownsburg station, WKLU, 15 miles from Indianapolis, was sold for $6.2 million.
Now, if 89.1 FM works well for you, great! If it’s a bit fuzzy, remember you can get our programming free through the internet on your computer. But if you want clear radio reception throughout Indianapolis, we’re glad to offer you another option!
Keep listening, thanks for your prayers and support, and keep spreading the [good] word about our radio ministry.
